New Mexico is old. Some ranches in New Mexico date back to Spanish land grant times, and further reflect an ethos recalling the Triassic, Jurassic, and Cretaceous ages when dinosaurs thundered amongst the Sangre de Cristo mountains encircling what would become Santa Fe, the oldest capital city in the U.S., founded by Spain in 1609, eleven years before Puritans sighted Plymouth Rock. Historic, colorful, redolent of sage and hot chili peppers, New Mexico is a powerful draw for those seeking ranch homes reflecting the Mexican Spanish atmosphere and the arts and traditions of its Native Americans - the Navajo, hopi, and Zuni tribes. New Mexico’s most famous ranch - Ghost Ranch - is not a ranch, per se, nor does it harbor ghosts - although it does harbor the memory of its most famous resident, the artist George O’Keeffe. The other most famous resident of New Mexico is the amazing Ted Turner, who owns three ranches in the state, his most recent acquisition being the 580,000 acre Vermejo Park Ranch in northeastern New Mexico.
