4 bedroom guest house, 1 room cabin with loft, 1 room apartment with kitchen. Runamuk spreads over many private acres of beautiful sandstone rimrocks, pine tree forests, meadows and valleys with breathtaking views and picturesque scenery. Each accommodation allows you to enjoy striking scenery, open skies, peacefulness and fresh mountain air. Our four bedroom, two bath guest house is decorated with family heirlooms from the 1920s and 30s. The guest house has a full kitchen with laundry facilities. It sits overlooking the ranch, offering relaxing views. A simple one-room apartment with private bath, kitchen and enclosed porch offers scenic views. Our retreat cabin, utilized by most guests as a place to just get away, sits six miles from the main ranch and offers absolute privacy. Enjoy the uniqueness of an outdoor shower nestled against rimrock on a hot summer day. This cabin takes guests back to the more simplistic life without cell phones(although most cell phones have service), computers or television. Viewing or hearing elk, mule deer and turkey is not uncommon. Fully equipped. Sleeps up to six guests comfortably. Phone, internet, and fax are available at the main ranch house.
RECREATION
---
Runamuk is for those who want a true ranch experience. As described by The Food Network, Runamuk is unspoiled and unpretentious--they don't try to be anything, they just are. Guests rebook at Runamuk for the ability to devise their own schedule, the opportunity for cattle work, the truly unlimited riding(when you want for how long you want) and its hosts. We are a 5th generation(since 1880) working cattle ranch raising commercial cattle and horses year round on 18,000 acres of private land consisting of pine tree forests, open meadows and sandstone rimrocks. Here you can experience genuine ranch life by riding horses and moving cattle in some of Montana’s beautiful country-from mountainous rides to open meadows and through pine tree forests. Although our main focus is riding, we also offer an array of activities off the back of a horse to accommodate each group or family member. We offer great food, horseback riding, cattle work, four wheeling, hiking, yoga, massage, beautiful scenery and a sanctuary to relax. And don't forget to check out our annual spring roundup and branding(June) and our Labor Day wagon train(September) where we move our cattle to fall pastures. Come join us May through June while we calve. This will include daily riding while new calves are born. Spring Roundup and Branding--June... Come join us and get in on the excitement of Runamuk's ranch branding. This is the real thing. Best suited for intermediate to advanced riders. This is our real ranch branding that we're inviting ya'll to join. For six days straight, we'll have daily cow work. We'll ride each day to gather and sort cow-calf pairs and move them to the holding corrals where we'll work them in the way of the old west. You'll then join us as we drive cattle to their summer pasture. You'll be able to get as much or as little riding as you can stand! We set up a tent camp at our homestead cabin where stories from the day's events are shared around the campfire. At the end of your trip--and your hard work--you'll indulge in a steak cookout and music around the campfire. For more details, please contact us. You may also have the opportunity to participate in our neighbor's Longhorn cattle branding. Very unique. These animals are quite wild. This is a popular event with limited spots available. Wagons Ho! Roundup-September... Join us on five days of scenic riding and camping peppered with some cattle work. Our camping locations change throughout the trip, from roughing it under the stars and the innocent sounds of night to pitching tents near our homestead cabin. This trip is not all play, though, we'll have cattle that need to be moved to fall pastures along the way. Enjoy cattle work and trail riding. We'll ride to an Indian pictograph, take a sunset ride to the "Buttes", and meander our way to old homesteads. In the evenings, relax around a campfire with great food and comraderie. On your last day, enjoy some arena events, a steak cookout, and western music. On this ride, you will be able to enjoy the peacefulness and serenity of our ranch. Last Saturday and Sunday in June... Runamuk Benefit Trail Ride Shine up yer spurs and dust off yer chaps, it's that time again! You got it...the 3rd annual Runamuk Benefit Trail Ride. Trail ride, barn dance and a whole lotta fun! Enjoy an afternoon sitting on the back of a horse or comfortably in a horse-drawn wagon seeing the sites of the Bull Mountains in beautiful Roundup, Montana. Ride a total of 15 miles through timbered trails, open meadows and over sandstone rimrock. At our half way point, you can tie your horse up and enjoy local "ranch-raised beef barbecued burgers" complete with all the fixin's! Meander your way back to the ranch with more fantastic views and a gander at a homestead cabin. Once back at the ranch, relax before dinner with our wine social and listen to Bluegrass music by Highway 302. This year, we're changing the dinner menu to a fantastic pig roast. Can't you just smell it now! But don't leave yet! There's a barn dance to top off your night! Stick around, though, because on Sunday, we're going to wake to homemade doughnuts, coffee and juice and head out on the trail again for a morning ride! We do not require a minimum stay and you can arrive and depart on any day of the week. We book on a first come, first served basis as we take a limited number of guests per week. Guests enjoy our genuine hospitality and the flexibility to devise their own schedule. We are located 50 minutes north of Billings, Montana. While relaxing, embrace our history and culture with one of our many western or Native American novels and biographies. Hunting mule deer, elk and turkey also available: www.greatwesternhunts.com Check out our upcoming events and overlap your stay with an event of your choice. Book your stay for these events soon as accommodations quickly book up.

REGION/CUSTOMS
---
Roundup, a historical town located along the banks of the Musselshell River, sits in an area surrounded by rimrock. This type of location made it a natural place for ranchers to "round up" their cattle in the fall of the year. As a way to relive this piece of history, Roundup became the trailhead of the Great Montana Centennial Cattle Drive in 1989. Due to the success of this commemoration, a cattle drive is now held annually in late August at Runamuk Guest Ranch. There are a myriad of activities that guests can enjoy in Roundup, such as swimming, visiting the historical museum, playing golf, and taking in rodeos, to name a few. Hunters and photographers enjoy the abundance of wildlife and picturesque scenery. For more on Roundup, please visit www.roundupchamber.com
HISTORY/HOSTS
---
Runamuk has a rich ranch history that has been documented back to the 1800s. Many remains of homesteads are still visible at different locations of Runamuk. Our retreat cabin was a homestead cabin that has been moved and refurbished as a guest cabin. A brief ranch history follows; however, for more in-depth knowledge of how our ranch came to be, check out "Horizons O'er the Musselshell". The home ranch first came into the family's possession in 1903 when (Great Grandpa) Bill Spidel and the owner, A.B. LaMott, formed a partnership and bought 1500 head of cattle. In 1912 LaMott died and Bill bought out his interest. In the years that followed Bill purchased abandoned homesteads and railroad sections. He married (Great Grandma) Hazel Roberts in 1917 and in 1920 her parents bought Mrs. LaMott's remaining interest in the ranch. In 1920 Bill acquired the Grand Champion Polled Hereford bull at the National Livestock Show in Des Moines, Iowa. This was the foundation of the largest herd of Polled Hereford cattle in the United States.
