After your day in the saddle you’ll sleep peacefully in our comfortable bunkhouse. Although, our ranch is very remote, thanks to solar power we are able to offer you the conveniences of home. Our bunkhouse has 2 bedrooms, one with a queen and double bed and the other with a full and two single beds, each with private baths, and hot showers. With a maximum of 6 guests you can feel right at home as you relax into the ranch. Help yourself to a snack, soda, iced tea, coffee, or tea from the always open kitchen, or ponder on the bunkhouse porch. Our living room area is equipped with satellite television, plenty of board games, books, magazines, and old movies for your leisure time. There is a huge handmade table for dining or just to sit around and enjoy great conversations about the days events. Our facilities are tastefully decorated and always clean.
RECREATION
---
A visit to Badger Creek Ranch is an adventure into back into time, when families made their claim and worked hard to live off the land. We are a working cattle in the high desert of Colorado, with rolling hills and majestic mesas, a breathtaking view and a lifelong memory are never more than a horse step away. While at the ranch you will be horseback riding and working our cattle. You will be an important part of our cowboy crew from saddling your horse, to riding fences, rounding up, moving, doctoring, and sorting our 100-200 head of cattle. There will be no head to tail riding here! Our rides are usually between 2-6 hours long over grassy meadows and rocky inclines, through peaceful wooded valleys and dramatic open mesas. In the evenings feel free to wander the Ranch, ponder on the porch, or kick back in the bunkhouse for T.V. or a movie. Other activities close to the Ranch include trout fishing in the Badger Creek or Arkansas River, whitewater rafting, visiting the famous Royal Gorge, hiking, mountain biking, or just trail riding in the scenic Rocky Mountains. Canon City and Salida are a close drive for shopping, rodeos, restaurants and golf. For complete details, please visit our web site www.badgercreekranch.com.
FOR CHILDREN
---
We welcome the young to experience the Ranch and the Western way of life, but because we do not have specific children programs and rides we request that children must be 12 years or older.
FOOD/LIQUOR
---
Hearty meals are prepared three times a day. We have no professional chef but pride ourselves on fresh home-cooked meals, made with Grandma's secret ingredient, love. Help yourself to snacks, soda, ice tea, tea and coffee anytime in the bunkhouse. A warm delicious breakfast of fresh eggs, from our very own chickens, french toast, pancakes with maple syrup, bacon, sausage and toast will keep you energized for the trails ahead.. Before leaving the bunkhouse you will fill your saddlebag with fresh sandwiches, fruit, chips and a choice of drinks and homemade goodies for your lunch out on the open range. No lunch will taste better then after a rewarding morning of riding sitting out in the mountain air under the shade of an Aspen tree. Dinners are served in the bunkhouse family style. Your hosts Eric and Sue invite you for dinners of traditional American food served with a flare. From Fettuccine Alfredo to Steak & Fries off the grill, meals are served hot, tasty and plentiful to satisfy a cowboy's hunger. Make sure you leave enough room for dessert as Sue's pies and treats have been talked about from Massachusetts to California! Badger Creek Ranch doesn’t have a liquor license but you are welcome to bring your own. Be sure to stop at one of the local stores either in Salida or Canon City.
BUSINESS/MEETINGS
---
Although we are small we welcome business groups and team building experiences. The bunkhouse provides a large common room that would adapt itself for workshops or meetings.
REGION/CUSTOMS
---
Our working cattle ranch is located in Colorado’s Badger Creek Basin at approximately 9,000 feet on the Ute Trail (Fremont County Road #2), 40 miles northwest of Canon City, and 20 miles northeast of Salida, with spectacular views of the Collegiate Peaks and the Sangre De Cristo Mountains. The area is rich in history. From the Ute Indians, who had their summer hunting grounds here, to the Spanish Conquistadors, to the pioneers, miners, and cowboys of the old West, to our present day Badger Creek Ranch, this is a land of countless tales, both fact and fiction.
HISTORY/HOSTS
---
Eric and Susan Hotaling are your host at Badger Creek Ranch. From their original home region of the Adirondacks Mountains of Upstate New York they have been traveling and falling in love with the West for years. Always being involved with horses and farming back East, it was their dream to come West and run a ranch. After leaving their careers as teacher and dental hygienist, Eric and Sue found their way to Colorado and are living their dream. They know others would love to sample the dream of becoming a cowboy, even for a little while, and enjoy offering that experience to you. From the romance to the reality of ranch life, we offer it all.
ITINERARY
---
Tack up (we’ll show you how) and ride out to check, doctor, drive, or sort our herd. Our livestock determine the job needed that day and the direction we will travel. Typically, we’ll be on horseback from 2-6 hours. After a good day in the saddle you may want to just hang around the bunkhouse for a cool drink on the porch or a well deserved nap. Other's may want to take a hike through the ranch’s canyons and bluffs. The walls of the canyons draw you into a time when the Ute Indians fought to the death with the Spanish Conquistadors to protect their land, or hike to the impressive Buffalo jump where the Ute Indians would gather their meat for the long winter ahead. A little further to the top of the jump and you visit the site of the Ute Village. Look carefully, the teepee rings are still visible! If you prefer bird watching the ranch is home to great summer birds. Be on the lookout for the whimsical Hummingbird, the beautiful Colorado Bluebird, or the clever Barn Swallow that make the most interesting nest in the steep rock walls around the grounds. Tired of looking up? The floor of the ranch is covered with interesting rocks and artifacts. Many have found arrowheads and worked stones, quartz with stripes of gold, and opals. The sunrises are worth getting up for and the sunsets are worth waiting up for. After dark, cozy up on a couch for an old movie, or play any number of games in the bunkhouse living room. Still want to be outdoors? Sit around a roaring campfire within the original stone foundation of Badger Creek‘s first homesteaders. Count the shooting stars, and make lots of wishes. There is always plenty to do on the ranch but sometimes the best thing to do is just relax and watch the puffy clouds roll by.
