LODGING
---
You’ve no doubt heard that the best places are hard to find. By that standard, Canyon Creek Guest Ranch is positively outstanding. 17 miles from the nearest highway, hidden amidst some 500,000 acres of wild lands in the Pioneer Mountains of Southwest Montana, Canyon Creek is also infinitely removed from the usual concepts of guest lodging or ranch stays. The ranch is so remote it’s literally off the grid – our electrical power is generated on site. Our new loft cabins are duplex cabins that allow accomodations for up to 4 people. Our original log cabins are also duplex cabins that will sleep up to 3 people. We offer one cozy single cabin that 2 people can enjoy. The lodge is a great gathering place for meals and relaxing.
RECREATION
---
Amidst the magnificent contours of this extraordinary land, there are endlessly winding rivers and streams, and six perfectly clear alpine lakes, each your own paradise. You might fish any of these waters for rainbow, cutthroat and brook trout, or spend a day on the fabled Big Hole River – one of the last places in the lower 48 to pursue rare Fluvial Arctic grayling – from private access via the Meriwether Ranch. All this crystal clear water and air at this elevation means world-class wildlife and botanical habitat. Canyon Creek is home to ample populations of deer, elk, moose, mountain lions, bighorn sheep, bald eagles and dozens of other species. You’ll also have a chance to seek out countless species of wildflowers, including lovely calypso fairy slipper orchids and others that grow only where the air and water is exceptionally pure. To ponder the past is to stimulate creativity and curiosity, and here, in the traces of pioneer settlement and the ambitious gold and silver mining boom, you’ll find stories of opportunity, hardship, great rewards and even bigger dreams. In modern times, very few people have traveled this way to see the century-old remnants of an abandoned silver mining ghost town, formerly with a population of 7,000, or the beehive-shaped kilns that once made charcoal for iron ore smelting. These ancient remains of a lost era and the almost palpable sense of time are yours to experience. With miles and miles of mountain trails that take you to the tops of mountains or to secret clear streams in remote canyons, you could hike or ride for days. Canyon Creek will give you as much or as little guidance as you like: on foot or horseback, you can take a guided adventure, then enjoy a campsite that’s been fully stocked and set up for you. Or you might prefer to hike and explore with the ranch naturalist. Another must-try option: the wranglers can outfit you with trail-sure horses and take you on the ride of your life!

REGION/CUSTOMS
---
Just showing up at Canyon Creek Ranch takes you back to a time of unspoiled open spaces, clear water, pure air. As you make your way up the long dirt road to the ranch, you'll reflect on the travels of history's few hardy people who passed this way. The ranch is a long way from anywhere, both in distance and in terms of elevation – the cabins are at about 7000 feet, surrounded by the area's tallest mountains. It's an amazing feeling to be up here, and we do everything we can to make you feel even more on top of the world .
HISTORY/HOSTS
---
Saying that Dave McClinton is passionate about the outdoors is an understatement. Throughout his adventurous adolescence, he spent countless days on horseback exploring the Rocky Mountain foothills outside of Colorado Springs. Not being satisfied with just one interest, he spent his time mastering fly fishing, hiking, hunting, skiing, and mountain biking. Feeling the draw from Mother Nature led him to Colorado State University where he obtained a degree in Natural Resource Recreation and Tourism. In addition to formal studies he also worked for CSU to provide service to campus located conferences. When not in class he pursued hiking and backpacking trips to numerous Colorado fourteeners and the Appalachian Trail. Dave also worked for the U.S. Forest Service leading interpretive hikes through the Indian Peaks Wilderness. By combining a down to earth, people pleasing personality with multi-faceted resource experience, he can provide visitors with a memorable and tailor fit mountain ranch vacation.
