Cattle & the Environment
Chico Basin Ranch views cattle not only as a tradition and a way of life of the American West, but also as a management tool that, when applied properly, improves the health of the prairie landscape.
We believe that the High Prairie grassland evolved in a symbiotic relationship with Bison. The ranch's grazing management emulates this relationship by rotating large herds of cattle through a series of pastures which allows the vast majority of the grazed plants to be fully rested each season. We believe that all plant and animal life that makes its home on the Ranch is precious and its long term health is critical to the viability of our business, the ecosystem which supports it and the people living on the ranch.
Throughout your stay, we invite you to ask questions about how and why we manage the land the way we do. We view our management as a continual learning process and believe that visitors to the ranch provide opportunities for both us and the visitors to learn something about the natural world.
