Lodging
Elkhorn's twenty cabins and Long House where we gather for meals are tucked amidst the mesquites of Sabino Canyon, surrounded by mountain views and the wide open Altar Valley. The cabins provide comfortable living for singles, couples or families, each with a private bath, electric heaters, good reading lights, a sitting area, and your own birdfeeder with unlimited birdseed. No phones or televisions in the cabins. Daily housekeeping and nightly bed turn-downs. Many repeat guests store things here, and we're happy to take care of special needs.
Activities
Elkhorn's beautiful mountain and desert country provide exceptional relaxation and riding for guests of all ages, ranging from beginners both young and old to experienced riders seeking new country and challenges to those who prefer relaxing around the buildings. (Children must be 6 to ride). Scenic mountain ventures as well as faster rides on the desert are arranged each day according to guests' interests -- rides are kept small to assure safety. Instruction is provided on the trail as needed. Walkers and hikers find the country equally enjoyable, especially given southern Arizona's outstanding birding and unique wildlife. A heated swimming pool, tennis court, horse shoes, shuffle board, ping pong, and well stocked library and game cupboards provide entertainment around the buildings. Popular near by sites include the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum, Buenos Aires National Wildlife Refuge, Tubac, Nogales, and the old Spanish mission San Xavier del Bac.
Children
Children are most welcome but must be 6 to ride. Kids can ride and eat with other kids or with adults. The five and under crowd will find the ranch grounds a wonderful place to explore and play, with supervision. Most families either take turns watching kids or bring a babysitter. Elkhorn does not provide childcare, though occasionally ranch crew may be available during their free time.
Dining
Home cooked meals are served buffet style and you can order hot breakfast of your choice. Meals are well balanced, nutritiously prepared and the variety appeals to most appetites -- baked goods are prepared daily at the ranch. You'll enjoy outdoor cooking several nights a week, as well as the Saturday picnic on the desert. Special dietary needs can be accommodated with advance notice, as well as birthdays and other special events. Beer and wine are sold at the ranch, as well as snacks. We suggest purchasing other liquor on your way to the ranch. Guests enjoy cocktails in their cabins before supper.
