Lodging
Our cabins, which are nestled in the pines are large but cozy with fireplaces, queen sized beds (and bunkbeds), coffee maker, full bath/shower, reading chairs, magazines and books, snacks, table/chairs, covered porches, and a cookie jar filled with homemade goodies. Our cabins are comfortably furnished in a Native American style or a Cowboy motif, and you will have a cabin to yourself - we never mix groups.
Activities
Whether our visitors come to ride or hike, they have truly memorable experiences. We have gentle horses suitable for riders of all abilities. In open meadows, among the Ponderosa or juniper forests, high on the hilltops overlooking the 3.3 million acre Gila National Forest, or along creeks and rivers in deep and narrow canyons, the scenery is spectacular. The weather here in the Black Range Mountains is just about the best we have ever experienced, anywhere in the world. Summertime temperatures normally range from the 40s in the evening, to the 80s during the day, with very low humidity. Skies are normally a brilliant, deep turquoise blue, cloudless in the morning, with puffy white clouds in the afternoon. Native American sites dating back to the Mimbres people of 750-1150 AD are nearby, including pithouses, cliff dwellings and pictographs. These sites are protected by state and federal law, and remain untouched. Your stay will be undisturbed and untroubled. We are 50 miles from the nearest town, 85 miles from the nearest stoplight, and cell phones don't work in these mountains. While there are very few human residents, there are large herds of elk, as well as bear, mountain lions, Mexican Grey wolves, and bald eagles here. The quiet is such that you hear the approach of a bird of prey by the beat of the wind beneath its wings.
Children
Our program, both for adults and children, follows no rigid agenda; leave your schedules and meeting times behind. Children and their parents rediscover structured and unstructured play at the ranch. In addition to competing in traditional indoor and outdoor games, our younger guests (and sometimes their parents) participate in rodeo-type games on horseback. Our horses enjoy the daily attention provided by grooming and feeding, and while Nacho and Taco, our miniature paint horses, don't take many riders, they are just the right size for a seven-year old to brush and take for a walk.
Dining
Meals are normally taken in the dining hall, on one large table with seating for 16, at a number of tables set among the Ponderosas, or - particularly for s'mores - around the campfire. We eat family style, and our meals include traditional ranch breakfasts, southwestern specialties, grilled steaks, chicken and salmon, and desserts ranging from pies to chocolate mousse! Special dietary requirements can be easily and tastefully accommodated.
