Lodging

The Hideout Lodge & Guest Ranch can accommodate 42 guests, but the management only allows around 25 riding guests per week to keep the experience personal, genuine and almost customized. There is always plenty of well-trained staff from multiple cultural and educational backgrounds (we speak six languages here) with a genuinely positive “can do” attitude.

The lodging at The Hideout is upscale and well-appointed in full log cabins with modern amenities. There are different styles of rooms available ranging from the traditional Hideout Cabins to The Casitas, which are small apartments, and an in-lodge guest room located in The Hideout Lodge. A guest house with three bedrooms, loft, kitchen, two bathrooms and living room is located two miles down the road for those who desire complete privacy. If you prefer fine, luxurious upscale housing there is The Hideout Home, a three bedroom, high end family home that can be rented at a premium.

All rooms and lodges are very clean, well kept feature amenities and décor that are updated on a yearly basis. All rooms and lodges are cleaned daily with a mid-week turn during which all sheets, towels, etc. are replaced by housekeeping.

The premises are well maintained; The Hideouts’ lawns are professionally irrigated and manicured several times a week.

No expense or effort is spared when it comes to quality; you will not find ten-year old mattresses in your room. The Hideout is well-funded and uses every resource to keep accommodations in top shape.

Our unique history and international assets offer guests both the experience of an upscale guest ranch and the ability to experience an operational cattle ranch in one of the most remote and nearly untouched areas of Wyoming.  Quality, safety and professionalism are key to this operation.

Activities

The Hideout is not your typical nose-to-tail guest ranch. Although a variety of excellent non-riding activities are offered, most guests come from around the world to ride or learn to ride, participate in cattle work, attend horsemanship clinics, riding programs and learn how to work cattle on the range with the cowboys using low stress herding methods. A full time clinician and horse trainer who has a rich heritage as a Vaquero training horses and handling livestock in Mexico and 12 years’ experience as a cowboy and horse trainer for Flitner ranch is more than happy to teach and share his knowledge with guests. The Hideout owns and trains most of their horses, all of which get fine tuned year-round on a regular basis. This intensive, detail-oriented riding and horsemanship program is why The Hideout attracts many experienced equestrian travelers and beginners alike.

The Hideout Lodge & Guest Ranch offers a variety of non-riding activities in addition to horseback riding. There is a great trap shooting program with 12 and 20 gauge Beretta shotguns, canoeing, fishing & fly-fishing, great hiking and mountain biking in a rarely seen variety of country and scenery, 4x4 tours in the mountains, wildlife tours, river floating, swimming ponds, ranch tours and the office will be very happy to help you plan a trip to Yellowstone and organizes weekly Cody Nite Rodeo excursions during the season. The Hideout Lodge features a game room with foosball table, billiards and other games. On a regular basis, The Hideout organizes special weeks with varying themes including photography, horsemanship, art, culinary arts and others.

The Hideout also involves the local people and business of this little town of 83 people in Shell, which offers another unique local piece of Wyoming’s charm.

Each evening, one of the wranglers will meet with the guests during cocktail hour to discuss what is available and what activities the guests would like to and sign up to participate in the following day. Families or groups can either do the activities together or enjoy what they individually prefer.

Children

During the summer months of June, July and August The Hideout welcomes many families with kids as young as seven to enjoy all that The Hideout has to offer, given younger children are in a capable position to take part in the ranch activities and riding. The Hideout does not offer a special kids program with counselors and nannies, because we believe that families need to enjoy and experience this precious vacation time “togethering” with each other. Many American and international families with teenagers visit The Hideout over the summer and forge long-lasting family memories.

As a family you will learn that this way of life and traditions still exist in The American West on a century old, 300,000 acre ranch. That cowboys, ranching, cattle, horses and living of the land not only exist on computer games & electrics. After their vacation the kids will know which end the hay or grass goes in to the horses and cows. They will know that horses are still needed to get the job done and that cars, trucks and 4-wheelers are helpful, but need the help of horses, cowboys and our guests.

We offer a variety of activities, but most of the kids want to go riding or participate in the cattle work once they get their first taste of what it’s like to be a cowboy!

Outside of the school vacation months, The Hideout is mainly visited by adults of different ages and nationalities as couples, singles and groups of friends.

We are family operated with one side of our family operating and managing the guest ranch and hospitality who are well travelled, come with international experience and language skills and the other side of our family who has ranched and farmed in this valley for over a 100-years, taking care of the ranch and farm life.

Dining

More and more guests, both new and returning, come to The Hideout Lodge & Guest Ranch for its rich culinary reputation. The executive chef, a Wyoming native, has been schooled and worked in a variety of European and North American establishments and keeps up with culinary trends from across the world. The Hideout’s chef pays attention to the importance of healthy food, using fresh ingredients from our own ranch garden, local farmers markets and small farms in the region.

The Hideout offers three full meals per day with wine at dinner and a nightly cocktail hour – all covered by the all-inclusive rates at The Hideout. The hearty Western-style breakfasts include hot items such as omelets, French toast, pancakes, fresh fruits and pastries and a selection of cereals, fruit juice and yogurt.

Guests who choose to have lunch at the main lodge will enjoy a delicious sit down lunch complete with fresh iced tea and a light dessert. Otherwise, a hearty sack lunch with made-to-order sandwiches, fresh fruit, granola bars and other snacks is made for you to take on the trail. After a day of riding or other pursuits, guests take a refreshing shower  and then head over to cocktail hour where they are treated to variety of hors d’oeuvres and conversation before a 3-course dinner. On the menu there are western staples like delicious certified prime or choice Angus steaks, but there are also other favorites like fresh fish, lamb, chicken, game, etc.

During the summer months of June through September, weekly cookouts are a favorite of the guests and staff alike and serve as a culinary and social finale to the week.
