| LODGING |
| Elkhorn's twenty cabins and Long House where we gather for meals are tucked amidst the mesquites of Sabino Canyon, surrounded by mountain views and the wide open Altar Valley. The cabins provide comfortable living for singles, couples or families, each with a private bath, electric heaters, good reading lights, a sitting area, and your own birdfeeder with unlimited birdseed. No phones or televisions in the cabins. Daily housekeeping and nightly bed turn-downs. Many repeat guests store things here, and we're happy to take care of special needs. |
| RECREATION |
| Elkhorn's beautiful mountain and desert country provide exceptional relaxation and riding for guests of all ages, ranging from beginners both young and old to experienced riders seeking new country and challenges to those who prefer relaxing around the buildings. (Children must be 6 to ride). Scenic mountain ventures as well as faster rides on the desert are arranged each day according to guests' interests -- rides are kept small to assure safety. Instruction is provided on the trail as needed. Walkers and hikers find the country equally enjoyable, especially given southern Arizona's outstanding birding and unique wildlife. A heated swimming pool, tennis court, horse shoes, shuffle board, ping pong, and well stocked library and game cupboards provide entertainment around the buildings. Popular near by sites include the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum, Buenos Aires National Wildlife Refuge, Tubac, Nogales, and the old Spanish mission San Xavier del Bac. |
| FOR CHILDREN |
| Children are most welcome but must be 6 to ride. Kids can ride and eat with other kids or with adults. The five and under crowd will find the ranch grounds a wonderful place to explore and play, with supervision. Most families either take turns watching kids or bring a babysitter. Elkhorn does not provide childcare, though occasionally ranch crew may be available during their free time. |
| FOOD/LIQUOR |
| Home cooked meals are served buffet style and you can order hot breakfast of your choice. Meals are well balanced, nutritiously prepared and the variety appeals to most appetites -- baked goods are prepared daily at the ranch. You'll enjoy outdoor cooking several nights a week, as well as the Saturday picnic on the desert. Special dietary needs can be accomodated with advance notice, as well as birthdays and other special events. Beer and wine are sold at the ranch, as well as snacks. We suggest purchasing other liquor on your way to the ranch. Guests enjoy cocktails in their cabins before supper. |
| BUSINESS/MEETINGS |
| Small groups and family reunions are welcome during the quiet of early December or early to mid January. Depending on group size, there may be availability at other times. Elkhorn does not have separate meeting rooms or conference facilities. |

| REGION/CUSTOMS |
| Located southwest of Tucson, Elkhorn Ranch is located within the undeveloped 800,000 acre Altar Valley -- a working landscape. Elkhorn and neighboring cattle ranches keep the spirit and practices of the old West alive and well, while pursuing conservation projects to lead the area forward. Notorious Pancho Villa, early rancher Sabino Otero, and early Native American travelers who left us puzzling rock art (petroglyphs) color the history of the Altar Valley. The unique and abundant birds and wildlife of the Sonoran Desert will tickle your curiousity -- have you ever seen a javelina or a coati? |
| HISTORY/HOSTS |
| The Miller Family purchased what was originally the Fresnal Ranch School in 1945 to establish a winter operation, having begun guest ranching in Montana in 1922. Elkhorn Ranch is now operated by the Charley and Mary Miller and Tom Miller, the third generation of the Miller Family. The fourth generation's legs are just getting long enough to reach their stirrups. |
| ITINERARY |
| Most guests arrive and depart on Sundays, the horses' day off. You'll be greeted Sunday evening with a roast beef barbecue and the chance to meet your new Elkhorn friends, the Miller family, and the Elkhorn crew. Your first morning, Charley Miller will talk with you about your riding experience and get you set for your first ride. You'll have the same horse and saddle all week, unless the fit isn't quite right. Charley will talk with you at breakfast and lunch each day to arrange the rides. All day rides with a sack or mule-packed hot lunch happen two days a week, along with the Saturday desert picnic (non-riders can hike or drive to the picnic). Thursday afternoon everyone takes a break from riding to give the barn crew time for horseshoeing, an ideal opportunity for a lazy afternoon by the pool or a hike. If you go sight seeing off the ranch, be sure to return in time for the Thursday evening steak barbecue! A week long stay provides a wonderful chance to become comfortable with your horse and the country, become at home at Elkhorn, and enjoy ranch friendships. A longer stay provides more space for sight seeing and the chance to really settle amidst the sunshine of Arizona and peace of ranch life. |
