HISTORY/HOSTS
Named for British seaman Juan Geronimo White, the estancia has a history deriving dramatically from its location on Samborombon Bay, where it was routinely pillaged by smugglers and freebooters. Ernesto Tornquist, a prominent entrepreneur and founder of the Tornquist Bank and Plaza Hotel, bought the 10,364 hectare estancia in 1901. When Don Ernesto’s daughter Maria Luisa, an aficionado of Tudor architecture, married Benjamin Muniz Barreto, she commissioned British architect Cecil Collcut to build the period-style cottage and a teahouse where she played Bach bourrees on her clavichord. Collcut, otherwise known for his design of the British Embassy in Buenos Aires, also designed Juan Geronimo’s stables. Today the descendants of Maria Luisa and Don Benjamin Muniz Barreto are the proud estancieros of Joan Geronimo, bringing honor and luster to the estancia’s heritage and history with its colonial silver, paintings, antique Portuguese furniture and a priceless collection of engravings and books.
