LODGING
---
Overlooking the tiny village of Shell, Wyoming, The Hideout offers guests luxurious private log cabins and casitas with beautiful Western decor. All cabins have modern bathrooms, satellite TV, high-speed internet, telephones, etc. plus porches with rocking chairs that overlook the spectacular Big Horn Mountains. Some cabins have queen-size beds and some have twin-size beds. Casita apt/suites offer king-size beds, separate living rooms, full kitchens, and in-room laundry facilities. Our Snowshoe Lodge has full-equipped cabins that are the best lodging in the pristine Big Horn Mountains. Then there's the Upper Hideout - our secluded mountain retreat that's just a half-day ride away, with three log cabins, owner's lodge, and a main lodge nestled among a stand of tall pines at 8,200 feet. Or how about Trapper Creek Lodge at the mouth of Trapper Creek Canyon, a historic hunting lodge/summer home built by the Wyeth Pharmaceutical family that has been restored to its previous splendor in recent years by the Flitner family. FYI: For barn saftey and comfort of other guests lodging with us, smoking permitted only outdoors, in designated areas. Cooperation appreciated.
RECREATION
---
All the horseback riding you could want (do as much or little as you like), either scenic trail rides or daily cattle drives and roundups. Wranglers and guests alike ride willing and sure-footed working ranch horses, mostly Quarter horse and similar stock breeds. For safe and enjoyable riding experiences during their stay, The Hideout wranglers carefully match each guest to a horse suitable for their particular riding level. On-premise recreation includes: weekly horsemanship sessions, arena horseback games and/or team penning, archery, landscaped swimming pond, outdoor hot tub, in-door rec rooms in main lodge includes pool table, catch-and-release fishing in Shell Creek or fishing ponds. Trap shooting and rifle range also on premises (nominal up charge). Optional excursions include fly fishing, airboat tours of the Big Horn River, visits to dinosaur track sites, hunting trips, wildlife & nature photography, guided tours of Yellowstone National Park, hiking, mountain biking, snowmobiling. A popular excursion, for example: into Cody, WY for Buffalo Bill Historical Center and Cody Nite Rodeo.
FOR CHILDREN
---
The Hideout is an adult-oriented resort environment (cocktails and four-course gourmet dinners). Children who are comfortable and well behaved in these surroundings are welcome at our ranch. The recommended minimum age for horseback riding is 10 years old. In certain cases, we will allow younger children to ride if they have had extensive riding experience and are ready to ride all day. A parent must ride with children at all times.
FOOD/LIQUOR
---
Cowboy Adventure Packages include three full meals a day and cocktail-hour refreshments prior to a gourmet dinner with wine. Breakfast includes hot items such as omlettes and pancakes to fresh fruits and pastries. Guests who choose to have lunch at the main lodge may enjoy menu selections such as grilled salmon salad to a burger made with Flitner choice beef. Otherwise, hearty packed lunch goes along with you on the trail. After a day on the trail or other pursuits and either a refreshing shower or soak in the hot tub, guests are treated to a four-course gourmet dinner that rivals that of any world-class restaurant. Complimentary cocktails and hors d'ouevres are served prior to dinner. Appetizers during cocktail hour may be crevettes madagascar, boursin canapés, horseradish beef tips, or curried chicken in filo pastry cups. Featured dinner entreés are Steak Diane, Veal Picata, Griswold Seared Beef Tenderloin, and Barbecued Glazed Seabass, just to name a few. Some favorite desserts are chocolate paté, peach pistachio torte, and chocolate mousse profiteroles with rasberry sauce. Beverages such as soda, coffee, tea, and juices are also provided. Other than cocktails before dinner and wine served at the table, additional spirits to enjoy in your cabin are also available for purchase. During the summery months, weekly cookouts are a favorite of the guests and staff alike (June through September).
BUSINESS/MEETINGS

REGION/CUSTOMS
---
The Hideout at Flitner Ranch is a guest ranch operating on an authentic 100-year-old working cattle and horse ranch. Encompassing over 250,000 acres with incredible diversity of terrain, the Flitner Ranch specializes in the production of Aberdeen Black Angus cattle and registered Quarter horses, with related farming operations. All questions from guests are welcomed. Guests may go on a tour of the ranch upon their arrival, familiarizing them with cowboy ways and Wyoming's spectacular area scenery. Thanks to loyal and devoted guests, Flitner Ranch remains an enduring legacy of ranching in the American West.
HISTORY/HOSTS
---
The Flitner Ranch was founded in 1906 -- where third, fourth, and fifth-generation Flitners still work and reside on the ranch. Greg Flitner (fourth-generation) manages all of the livestock operations, which consists of 1,300 head of cattle and some 250 Flitner-bred Quarter horses. To see his daughter Morgan (fifth-generation) work cows with her finished bridle horse, Dunny (a beautiful Flitner-bred Quarter horse mare) is sheer poetry in horsemanship. Today, David and Paula Flitner (third-generation) and dedicated staff are your hosts at The Hideout at Flitner Ranch. Where you are neither customer or client, but an honored guest.
ITINERARY
---
Upon arrival you are greeted at main lodge by staff, there may be a tour of the ranch before meeting and mingling with wranglers and other guests at a cook-out your first evening. Head wrangler Bill Schwarz will outline the range of activities to choose from during your stay. There's the informative and entertaining Monday morning orientation on horsemanship and western riding. This is also when you get matched up with a horse, trying out fit of the saddle etc. Most of the guests want to ride, ride, ride. However, we can arrange shorter scenic trail rides or other activities and excursions as so desired. There are also many less strenuous recreational guest amenities on the grounds (see activities noted above). The schedule of guest activities revolves largely around the daily cattle work though (typically driving cattle, round ups or branding per season). Everyday, anywhere from 1 to 4 rides may be going out, each lasting anywhere from 2 to 8 hours. Wrangler-to-guest ratio is about 1 to 3 (that is, 7 wranglers for about 20 guests), which allows The Hideout to provide a wide variety of riding offerings. There's a 2:1 horse-to-guest ratio, ensuring a fresh mount for the day. After a day of fun, all get cleaned up for cocktails in the loft lounge. Photos of the day are presented with music, to accompany complimentary drinks and appetizers. A gourmet dinner is served in the dining room. Live cowboy music by recording artist and Hideout wrangler Stewart Reed is after dinner entertainment at least one evening during the week. Upper Hideout: July to October, there's a weekly overnight trip to the Upper Hideout, a remote mountain retreat. After a five-hour horseback ride, guests are always happy to find the same comfort and luxuries that are offered at The Hideout's main lodge (individual cabins, hot water, electricity - even hair dryers in each room!) ... and fine food. Four out of five guests return to The Hideout for the camaraderie, renewal, and sense of belonging. You will see why by visiting our ranch website (click button).
