---
The beautiful log cabins and the 4-plex rooms offer contemporary ranch comfort. Nicely appointed with original artwork, your guest rooms also include a refrigerator for your convenience, and a wood burning stove or fireplace for ambiance. Your stock of homemade caramel corn is replenished each morning. Daily maid service is provided.
RECREATION
---
Your recreational experience, like your dining or other experiences at the ranch, depends upon genuinely friendly and knowledgeable staff. Many guests laud Latigo for having a staff comprised of people who are not only capable, but who really want to serve you and help you have a terrific vacation. “Where do you ever get such incredible people!” Scarcely a day goes by that guests don’t tell us they have never met more polite and caring staff. When The Best of Colorado:The Essential Guide to Favorite Places voted Latigo Ranch as "the best dude ranch in Colorado", they had plenty of reasons - unforgettable views, a finely-tuned horse program, highly-acclaimed meals and the caring staff. All have combined to bring thousands of Latigo guests back over the years. The outstanding horse program at Latigo Ranch gives you opportunities for morning rides, afternoon rides, all-day rides, breakfast rides, overnight pack trips, riding instruction in the arena, riding instruction out on the trail, family rides, evening rides, and the option to groom and saddle your horse - you’ll have the same horse for the week. Other activities include: hiking, fly fishing, rafting, heated swimming pool, hot tub, naturalist walks (by owner Jim Yost), and evening entertainment. Mountain bikes can be arranged for those who want to explore the vast trail network. Owner, Kathie Yost, acts as the concierge – just talk with her to help arrange for your special activities.
FOR CHILDREN
---
“I’m bored!” is something you will never hear from your children while at Latigo. Our summer children’s programs operate each day during the scheduled horseback riding times. Babysitting can be arranged. There is a program for the 3-5 year olds, and one for those able to ride out on the trail (ages 6-13.) The programs offer varying activities for the different age groups. Over 13, teens will ride as a group or with the adults. In addition to horseback riding, your kids can frolic in the pool, explore the playground, fish in the stocked pond, make crafts, play in the teepee, pet the ranch animals, and much more.
FOOD/LIQUOR
---
Two of the owners, Randy & Lisa George, are in the kitchen constantly insuring that your meals are varied and delicious. The kitchen prepares meals you won’t want to miss, with choices for those who prefer light meat, hearty beef, vegetarian or other special diets (such as low fat or low carbohydrate.) The breakfast buffet of fresh fruits, juices and cereals complements a vast selection from the grill including pancakes, cinnamon French toast, local award-winning bacon, omelets, and the ever popular ranch breakfast burrito. And that is just the beginning of the day. You'll find lots of fresh veggies and fruits in addition to scrumptious homemade breads, cookies, and deserts. If the main meal leans toward the tastes of our adult guests, the children have their own "kid friendly" dinner. There is a counselor or wrangler available to sit with the kids for lunch and dinner, so that the kids can “eat and run,” while the adults linger longer and enjoy the conversation.

REGION/CUSTOMS
---
There are no big housing developments or resort towns in the area. Latigo is nestled on the edge of the Gore Mountain Range with spectacular vistas in all directions. Here you’ll find mountain brooks and streams meandering through open meadows with beaver ponds. We are surrounded by forests of pine, fir, and spruce. You will also see some of the largest aspen trees in Colorado. Our elevation assures us of good winter snows – the key to stunning wildflowers and beautiful forests and glades. The area was explored by the British adventurer Lord Gore in the early 1800’s, and the local economy has relied on the ranches and forests ever since. The ranch now known as Latigo was started in 1928 on the edge of the National Forest. Today we are permitted equal opportunity service provider on the Medicine-Bow & Routt Forest.
HISTORY/HOSTS
---
Randy & Lisa George and Jim & Kathie Yost are hands on owners, and have operated Latigo Ranch since 1987. They come from diverse and interesting backgrounds. Give us a call to find out more.
ITINERARY
---
We are flexible in accommodating your desires for riding and activities. The speed of your daily ride will depend upon the terrain and trail conditions, but we offer rides that are paced for walk only, walk & trot, and walk, trot, & lope. Our activities help you to develop your horsemanship throughout the week. Here is a typical schedule for a week at Latigo Ranch: Sunday- Arrive at the ranch between 2 and 6pm. Get settled in and explore the facilities or try out your fishing skills. You already feel like “family coming home.” Dinner is served at 6:30pm in the historic log Main Lodge, during which the head wrangler will talk with you to discover what horseback riding goals you have for the week. After dinner, you will learn more about the ranch activities and the horse program during our guest orientation in the Social Club. Monday- You can opt for the pre-breakfast fly fishing instruction. Sipping coffee or tea and soaking in the scenery before you try your hand at casting. Arrive at the barn by 9am for the riding orientation to see how and learn why we handle horses the way we do at Latigo. This session is followed by an easy ride to make sure you, your horse, and his saddle are right for each other. Families reconnect after the morning ride. Then, after lunch, we offer more riding and riding instruction geared toward helping you improve your skill and confidence – no matter the level at which you start. Musical entertainment is provided by our local cowboy poet and singer, Reed Taussig. Tuesday- You can start the day with a guided hike before breakfast. Perhaps you take part of this morning to refine you horse communication skills by learning the value of groundwork and practicing with your horse. After a great morning ride to one of our beautiful locations like the Beaver Ponds, we have a lunch cookout. Right after lunch, you can take the nature walk with owner, Jim Yost. Some find this a time to swim, hit the hot tub, try some more fishing, or just laze in the shade. There is an early dinner followed by sunset rides arranged so that families can ride together. You might ride to the Waterfall on Red Dirt Creek or take in the views from Kasdorf Peak above the ranch. After the rides return, dessert is served in the Social Club where you can play pool, foosball, ping pong, or choose a book from the eclectic collection in our library loft. Wednesday- The day will hold regular morning and afternoon rides for those who wish, but all-day rides and the overnight pack trip are also available. The all-day ride give you a chance to see places like Elk Wallows or Buffalo Park without having to return to the ranch for lunch. Those on the overnight pack trip might have lunch on the trail at Paintbrush Meadow on the way High Rock Creek or to any one of our other 15 pristine campsites. The overnight is a low impact camping experience where we pack everything in and everything out each week. We provide the sleeping bags, tents, and pads. We also take care of all of the cooking. For those who return after their all-day ride or afternoon ride, there is dinner as usual at the Lodge. Afterwards, you can try your hand at the Western art of throwing a rope or cracking a whip. Thursday- Morning rides as usual, and the overnighters return in time for lunch. With afternoon rides to places like Reservoir Saddle or Windy Gap, the scenery is always breathtaking. After dinner, you can workout the kinks learning to enjoy some square dancing and country line dancing. Friday- Some can’t resist the call of the Colorado River to spend the morning rafting. Others really want to help gather the cattle out of the pasture, and drive them up into the Arena for the Team Penning activities that afternoon. If you go rafting, don’t worry; you will be back in time to rally your bunch for a turn at Team Penning. Ride the hay wagon to your dinner cookout of grilled steaks and salmon. Saturday- You’ll find yourself at the barn early to head out on the breakfast ride to a beautiful site with views of the Indian Peaks Wilderness Area, the Gore Range, and Eagle’s Nest. Afterwards, you can head straight back to the ranch or out on a longer-last-ride-of-the-week. Finish with lunch and checkout that afternoon. As you head home, you’ll talk about your new friends, the special experiences you’ve lived, and when you will be back again.
