Montana took its name from the Spanish word meaning 'mountainous.' This is certainly true, with its magnificent jagged peaks, yawning canyons, ice-sculpted valleys, bright-white glaciers, lakes and waterfalls. The Blackfeet Indians were so awed with the region around Glacier National Park that they deemed it sacred ground. It is no wonder this 'Big Sky Country' with its rolling hills, river valleys, wildflower filled meadows, deserts, peaks and plains has been the backdrop for so many movies. A visitor traveling through the state is also greeted by grassy prairies, copper-colored wheat fields, endless blue skies with towering clouds; yet one is always surrounded by a continuous backdrop of mountains. There is more wildlife in this rugged state than people, with elk, grizzly bears, mountain lions, wolves, mountain goats, bison, moose, bald eagles and other raptors. Superb fishing can be enjoyed in the state's myriad trout streams, as well as river rafting. Other activities can include backpacking, horse-back riding, downhill and cross-country skiing, camping and hiking.
