| A HISTORY OF ROCKING HORSE RANCH ƒç Rocking Horse Ranch was created in 1958 by the Turk family; Toolie, his wife Gloria and his brother Bucky. Although they were all born in New York City, they had been introduced to riding at an early age and wanted a way of life that included horses. Weekends found them upstate working at dude ranches and hotels to earn extra money and be able to occasionally ride horses. Dude ranches were different then, without the frills that most resorts offered. It was primarily just horses. Accommodations were rustic and facilities weren¡¦t family-friendly. The Turk's believed that families would love a dude ranch that combined the casual, rustic flavor and hospitality of a western dude ranch with the comforts and facilities of a modern resort. One that catered to their needs. And so, in 1958, Rocking Horse Ranch was created in Highland, NY, in the Hudson Valley region, near the West Bank of the Hudson River. The Main Lodge building, built in 1971, is constantly refurbished to maintain the rigid standards required of their AAA 3-diamond and Mobil Guide ratings. In 1985, Steve Turk, Toolie & Gloria¡¦s son, joined the family team to continue their tradition of Quality, Service and Hospitality. Steve¡¦s goal was to make the resort even more accommodating and assure its continued operation. Their combined efforts have been recognized with numerous awards citing the ranch as being one of the best in the nation. The guest list now includes the children and grandchildren of the first guests. Over 85% of the guests are either returns or referrals. Each season shows improvements that build on 5 decades of pleasing guests. The Turk family is still there every day, hosting to the many regularly returning guests and looking forward to making more friends. |
