LODGING
---
Timberlock's buildings are linked only by footpaths. Upon arrival, staff tote in your baggage and cars are parked at a central spot easily accessible. All have good, hotel-style firm beds, freshly made with adequate blankets, towels, soap, matches and furnishings. Cabins with baths Cabins are nestled along a half mile of Indian Lake's shoreline. Cabins are basic but comfortable. All have a lake view and plenty of distance between for privacy. Large cabins can accommodate up to eight. Small cabins are suitable for two or three. Both have separate bedrooms, full bath with either tub-shower or stall shower, sitting room, open deck or screen porch and excellent beds. No Electricity It’s true…none of our guest cabins have electricity and although it may sound impossible it is often said to be our strongest plus. Propane lights give a warm cheery light suitable for reading. Propane also fires the hot water heater. A wood stove takes the chill off on cold nights. There is so much to do that no one complains about the absence of TV. Cabins without baths Cabins without baths are located right at the water’s edge. Occupants share “trailbaths” which are nearby and complete with toilet, sink and hot shower. These cabins have two twin beds and small covered porches. Our rates include: three meals daily picnic lunches on request coffee & tea anytime guest refrigerator plenty of ice all bedding towels portacribs children's play area beach toys campfires occasional evening programs use of supervised wood shop adult lodge children's play lodge canoes, rowboats & kayaks sailboats & windsurfers waterskiing Sunday afternoon guided trips lake cruises unlimited tennis on four courts (2 all weather, 2 Hartru) archery instruction with any of the equipment.
RECREATION
---
Some people don’t do much of anything...they sleep and read, cool off in the lake and enjoy our home cooked meals. Others take it on the run, sampling a little of everything...but we don’t care what you do...everything on the place is on a take it or leave it basis, there are no pre-planned programs other than meal hours...do what you want when you want. Swimming - is excellent, clean and clear. A large sandy beach at center camp features a dock with swing rope, float, huge 25 foot water trampoline that is a favorite with all and a big sandpile with toys. You may also swim in front of your cabin or from the various rocky points and island beaches around the lake. WE DO NOT POST LIFE GUARDS. PARENTS ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR WATERFRONT SAFETY. Sailing - we have a fleet of easy to sail Hobi sailboats, and several windsurfers. Canoeing - we have plenty of 16 foot Royalex Old Towns or 17 foot Alumacraft canoes which will carry 2 adults and 2 children. Moonlight paddles, picnic excursions and day canoe trips to other lakes and rivers are popular. Kayaks - easier to handle in the wind and great for kids, we have a number of two person Aquaterra kayaks as well as single person Wilderness Systems boats. Rowboats - more stable for fishing or for a short workout, we have a lovely Finnish Dory, an aluminum rowing boat and a couple of classic Adirondack guideboats. Motors - Small 10 horsepower outboard motors may be rented by the day or the week. Guest Boats - are welcome and we provide dock space on a first come basis. Water-skiing - is provided at no charge on Sunday afternoons. At other times on request with charges divided among participants. We provide a driver and instructor and can accommodate beginners to experts. Instruction - Staff will instruct with any waterfront craft and there is no charge. Hiking - there are hundreds of hiking trails available, some leave right from the property, others are a short drive away. Fishing - the principal game fish is the smallmouth bass. There are also northern pike, salmon, and lake trout for the serious and equipped fishermen. Stream fishing for trout is available all summer. The best fishing is in June, and early July. There can be good fishing in July and August but it can also be disappointing depending on stocking and your ability. Licenses are available nearby...ages 16 and under don’t need...kids can always catch rock bass and perch right out front using any old pole and worms. Tennis - two all weather and two well maintained Hartru clay based courts provide unlimited play at no charge. Biking - guests may bring their own road or mountain bikes. The road between Indian Lake and Speculator has reasonable shoulders and the road from Indian Lake to Blue Mt. Lake has a special black topped bike path. Mountain bikers can use our horse trails or ride the many nearby dirt roads. Horseback Riding - we own and train our own horses and know their reliability. However, because insurance cost is prohibitive, riders must sign a comprehensive waiver for themselves and their children. We have three trail rides every morning except Saturday...beginner to advanced. We also teach ring lessons and provide hard hats for the children. More adventuresome may go on mountain picnic rides of several hours. A guide accompanies all rides. Archery - our three-target, fenced range is very popular with all ages. Equipment is provided. Golf - two nine hole courses in Indian Lake Village about 10 miles from Timberlock and another in Speculator.Greens fees are low and while these are not championship courses, they are very popular with guests since they are almost never crowded. We also have horseshoes, badminton, ping-pong, volleyball, basketball, and a playing field.
FOR CHILDREN
---
All of the adult activities are also available to children. We also have a separate adventure camp for teens... Based at Timberlock on a separate cabin site, our program includes hiking, canoeing, sailing, windsurfing, waterskiing, kayaking, tennis, swimming, horseback riding, rock climbing, wilderness skills, environmental awareness and a lot more. Our small size allows us greater flexibility and the ability to focus on individual needs. Two leaders and six to eight campers per session. Trips and activities are geared for the age group and ability level. Packed with learning and fun, we explore the Adirondacks while building self-confidence and developing lasting friendships. The leadership is caring and well trained. Many of our staff are graduates of the program. The Voyageur two week program involves a combination of in camp activities and one extended canoe or hiking trip. The Trekkers ten day program involves a longer canoe or hiking trip with less time in camp.
FOOD/LIQUOR
---
We serve three meals a day on a covered porch open to the sun and breeze and with sweeping views of the lake. If weather turns bad, we can drop the clear curtains. Meals are plentiful, varied and healthful with traditional meat dishes, vegetarian options, and plenty of fresh salads, fruits and vegetables. Most special diets can be accommodated with advance warning. Our dining is informal and children sit at the same table with their parents. Picnic lunches are packed on request for trail, boat or car at no charge.
BUSINESS/MEETINGS
---
Meetings and retreats work best in early weeks of season or September. Our lodge works well for meeting space and has heat, tables and electricity for presentations. The dining porch can also be made available with large tables for spreading out projects.
REGION/CUSTOMS
---
Timberlock is one of the oldest summer family resorts in the Adirondacks, enjoying a spectacular wilderness lakeside setting surrounded in all directions by miles of forest preserve and mountain views. Timberlock is for those who would slow their pace, step back a page in time and sample a life close to the land. Timberlock is not a luxury resort. We have elected to remain rustic and informal while retaining many of the original camp traditions. We still split piles of stove wood, light with gas lamps, walk the same 100-year-old paths and represent the wishes of our guests to remain "rustic but not rough". Timberlock is more than just a vacation. It is an experience.
HISTORY/HOSTS
---
Your Hosts The Catlin family has owned and operated Timberlock since 1964. Bruce and Holly Catlin are the current hosts with their three children, Caroline, Gus and Nick. Bruce’s parents, Dick and Barb, ran the camp for thirty-five years and continue to assist. Dick spent summers as a boy at the camp in the 40’s. Bruce's sister, Toni Catlin, is pursuing a career in music and often helps out at Timberlock. In the off season, Bruce and Holly live in Lincoln, Vermont, Dick and Barb live in Addison, Vermont. The Timberlock Staff We have a great crew of high school and college kids who put much spirit into the camp...many have been guests with their families, know the place well, love their work and enjoy being with people...it will be your pleasure to know them.
