In the true western tradition many cattle ranchers continue to open their spreads to travelers. Depending on the ranch you choose, you may participate in the day to day chores and ranch life. These experiences usually open ones eyes to the rugged landscape and life that helped to shape America.

Just like the name implies these are ranches that specialize in hosting guests from around the world. In most cases, you will enter a stranger and leave a friend. Many are hosted by the owners themselves. There are a number that are run by General Managers.

RESORT RANCHES:

A number of properties have elected to develop resort facilities and programs. This offers guests the opportunity to enjoy a variety of activities including swimming, golf, tennis, massage, along with traditional guest ranch activities. While few and far between, resort ranches have lots of opportunities for families as well as corporations.

FAMILY RANCHES:

Except for a limited number of properties that specialize exclusively in hosting adults (18 years and up) most ranches across North America welcome families. Some have tailored their programs especially towards children - a good number are famous for their children’s programs. If you have children, it's a good idea to inquire as to the nature and extent of these programs. P.S. ranches are excellent for family reunions.

FLY FISHING RANCHES:

While many Ranch and lodge properties offer fishing as one of their activities, a good number today specialize in this exciting sport. Programs vary as do costs. Guides, equipment, schools and fish can be found around the world. Your job is to match your skill or level of interest with the Ranch or Lodge that will help to make your dreams come true.

CROSS COUNTRY SKIING RANCHES:

It can be a winter wonderland in ranch country. Many travelers have never given much thought to spending winter at a ranch. Today Ranches become cross-country ski lodges offering in some cases everything from snow shoeing, sleigh rides, downhill skiing (nearby) to snow coach tours into parks and fondue.

WHITEWATER RANCHES:
River rafting is one of the most exciting and awesome experiences one can have - not to mention the thrill of rafting whitewater. Many Ranches offer this activity themselves or book trips through local rafting outfitters. Whether you are watching for wildlife on a scenic float trip or hanging on for dear life and showered with river spray, this is an adventure you will never forget.

LODGES:

Lodges today come in all different shapes and sizes. Old and new Lodges radiate the grandeur of yesteryear. Many ask, "What is the difference between a Ranch and a Lodge?" It really depends on the way in which it is operated. Many think of Lodges without horses but that is not always the case. There are in fact several world class lodges that offer excellent riding programs.
