The word 'Wyoming' is adapted from a Delaware Indian word meaning 'at the great plains' or 'on the great plain.' Yet the state of Wyoming also encompasses endless grasslands, spectacular mountains, canyons, deserts and many other natural wonders, including two of our most dramatic National Parks: Grant Teton, known for its glaciers, snowfields and lush green stands of fir, pine and spruce; and Yellowstone, known for its fascinating geyser activity, resulting from a volcanic eruption some 600,000 years ago. A visitor to Wyoming is also greeted by stunning scenery of verdant valleys, deep gorges, canyons, lakes and forests where deer, elk, bison, moose and bear and other wild animals, including wolves reintroduced in 1997 into Yellowstone, all wander at will in the back country. Hiking, mountain climbing, skiing, white water rafting, float trips, camping, canoeing, fly fishing, photography and ice fishing are some of the many activities that can be enjoyed in Wyoming's diversity, which also includes 1,300 miles of snowmobile trails in the state's millions of acres of wilderness. Truly a land of awesome beauty.
