LODGING
---
The lodge and surrounding buildings are part of an original homestead built in the late 1800's and have since been renovated. Each room features it's own private bathroom and some have a private outside entrance. We are set up for indoor and outdoor dining. The lodge is located within a beautiful stand of cottonwood trees.
RECREATION
---
| Ranch Activities - 1.Ranch Work-gathering cows, doctoring cattle, cattle drives, branding, weaning, irrigation and fence building are all in a days work on the ranch. 2.Ranch Horsemanship-We have developed a comprehensive program that minimizes horse/human problems by putting the emphasis on teaching our guests the importance of communication with their horse from the very start. In our opinion, the most special thing that we can offer our guests is a chance to really get to know what it feels to be able to communicate with his or her horse and to be able to contribute to the days work. 3. Photo Safari-tour the ranch by horse, vehicle or by foot to take spectacular photos of nature, wildlife and mountain landscapes Local Activities - All within one hours travel 1.Great Sand Dunes National Park & Preserve-Only 6 miles away. Spend a day visiting the newest national park in the U.S. 2. Zapata Falls only 3-miles to a 40-ft water fall that lays within a granite canyon 3. Mountain Home Lake- Fishing for Trout 4. Narrow Gauge Railroads-Ride one of two narrow gauge trains that run in the valley. 5. White Water Rafting-raft the mighty Arkansas River 6. | The Education Center, has been remodeled into a wonderful meeting room. It features a power point projector, flip charts, easel, markers, and other necessary office and presentation supplies. The ranch has wireless internet available for free. |
REGION/CUSTOMS
---
The 103,000 acre Zapata Ranch is located in the historic San Luis Valley adjacent to the Sangre de Cristo Mountain Range and the newest National Park in the U.S., the Great Sand Dunes National Park & Preserve. The San Luis Valley is home to the Spanish Trail and the oldest settlement in Colorado. Zapata Ranch is home to one of the nations largest wild bison herds along with elk, deer, antelope, coyote, bobcat and numerous species of birds. The ranch also lies in the migratory path of the Sand Hill Cranes.
HISTORY/HOSTS
---
Over the past eight years, we have spent much time integrating our guest programs into the daily ranch routine so that the guests can be involved safely and at the level they want to be involved, at their own comfort level and in such a way that they can contribute to the outcome of the day's work. We have thought through all the details that will make your experience exceed your expectations, and most importantly, enable you to have a great time.
ITINERARY
---
As a weeklong ranch guest your first day will begin with an orientation to horsemanship. We will help you polish basic horsemanship skills regardless of your level of experience. We take time to impart knowledge and encourage the independence of our guests so they can understand and enjoy their time horseback and contribute positively to the work at hand. We typically spend the next several days locating cattle on grass and water, doctoring cattle, rotating pastures, monitoring cattle and range conditions, gathering and driving large groups of cattle, riding out to enjoy the scenery, looking for wildlife and working on your horsemanship. For a break from the saddle we offer you a glimpse into the heart of our ranching operations to learn about our grazing practices and why they are so important. For those of you who are interested in the nuts and bolts of ranching we can get you set up helping with daily ranch chores and learning about the behind the scenes life of beef and bison production. We train and condition our horses as part of our livelihood so often days can be spent watching and or participating in the training stages of ranch horses. If your aching muscles need a rest you can take a day off and go hiking in the Great Sand Dunes National Park or into the mountains, take a ride on a narrow gauge railway or simply relax with a book.
